Synagogue

The synagogue was sold in 1938 to the municipal savings bank. Because public companies could not file for compensation there are no files and we have no information how the deal took place.

If in “Reichskristallnacht” the synagogue burnt down or was only destroyed symbolically is unclear. On the one hand side Heinz Pallus, the son of the CEO of the municipal saving bank, Josef Pallus, later wrote in his biography that his father in the morning of November 9 was called by a NSDAP-office which wanted to announce that the synagogue would be destroyed that night but his father could convince the Nazis to destroy the synagogue just symbolically in order not to destroy national wealth. Heinz Pallus further testified that he was in the synagogue on the next day and that only the interior was destroyed but that the building was untouched.

On the other hand side there are testimonies of several old ladies, thereof Renate Schröer, who said to me, that as young girls they saw that the whole side of the marketplace from the Siedner building to the synagogue was burning.
