The Eisner shop

The Eisners run a wholesale and retail grocery. He was in charge for the wholesale business whereas she ran the retail business. They sold everything from white goods to seeds, pesticides, agricultural machinery, porcelain, alcohol, cigarettes and they ran a gas station.

This property was located directly opposite of my grandfather’s apartment and business premises. It was the biggest shop in Guttentag in one of the best locations, close to the marketplace. The shop of my grandfather was located direct opposite.

The Eisner-premises were 165 m² large, thereof 112 m² were commercial area. In addition there were wood-sheds and storage capacities.

The shop of my grandfather was 86 m² large. There was a flat of 240 m² and storage capacities as well as a workshop and storage capacities.

The Eisners as well as the Schatkas considered themselves to be well-off, which was quite appropriate assessment at that time, but applying contemporary standards this assessment has to put into perspective.
